Microneedling with Probiotics
Conveniently located to serve the areas of New York, NY
Microneedling is commonly offered at many spas, but here at Medicine of Tomorrow, we take an innovative approach to the popular treatment. We combine potent compounds with this technique, thereby allowing for better absorption and more efficacious results
Microneedling with probiotics offers several advantages over platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for skin rejuvenation. While PRP involves injecting the patient’s own concentrated platelets into the skin to stimulate collagen production and promote healing, microneedling with probiotics offers a more holistic approach by addressing both the physical and microbial aspects of skin health.
As a Physician of Integrative and Functional Medicine, Dr. Raphael Kellman is at the forefront of developing new techniques to improve the microbiomes of the body in order to create results that manifest not only on the skin’s surface but in the underlying structures as well.

The Skin Microbiome
The skin is the largest organ in the human body, and it is also home to a vast microbial community called the skin microbiome. When the microbiome is disrupted by external or internal events, it can have significant effects on your outward appearance, as well as your internal health. This can manifest in the form of skin diseases and other aesthetic imperfections. (1) In order to restore the health of your skin microbiome, we must create balance amongst the diverse microbes that live on and within the skin. Once there is balance, the skin can return to a state of homeostasis, which is crucial for achieving healthy skin that is resistant to accelerated aging. (1)
According to recent studies, the skin microbiome can change as a person ages. (1) For example, the precise microbes that are present in and on the skin may be different between those who are younger and those who are older. (1) Specifically, older individuals can have less diversity of microbe species, as compared to younger individuals. (1) Thereforet, if we restore healthy diversity to the microbes of the skin, we can make the skin healthier and more adept at combating some of the symptoms of aging. Without proper microbiome balance and diversity, the skin can become more dry and thus more prone to wrinkling and sagging. (1)
How Does Microneedling with Probiotics Work?
At Medicine of Tomorrow, we understand that treating the environment of the skin is a delicate science–even the most minor alterations can cause drastic changes to the skin and the overall health of an individual. (2) To address the very specific needs of the skin, we have developed a customized microneedling procedure that incorporates the infusion of vital probiotics and other potent compounds. These treatments work synergically to restore balance to the skin by giving the skin exactly what it needs to fight some of the effects that aging can have on the skin.
Combining these treatments can produce enhanced aesthetic results compared to more conventional treatments found at most spas. Microneedling works to stimulate the collagen that the skin might be lacking, while the probiotics have their own anti-aging benefits by reintroducing important microbes back to the skin. This is a great alternative to surgical anti-aging techniques, as microneedling with probiotics comes with fewer risks to the patient, yet still yields magnificent results. This combined procedure is minimally invasive and effective for improving the effects of aging on the skin, such as dark spots, discoloration, wrinkles, dryness, and more! (2)
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is the process of creating tiny holes in the top layers of the skin. This procedure is customizable depending on your needs, as Dr. Kellman can adjust the depth of the microneedling device. (2) This type of skin therapy utilizes a handheld device that employs rows of tiny needles that will create the wound response your skin needs to stimulate collagen production. (3) Collagen protein production can slow as we age, which contributes to the accelerated aging of the skin, or all the telltale signs of aging like volume loss, dryness, dullness, and unevenness. The microneedling process will also result in elastin production, which will make the skin appear and feel more elastic and youthful. (3) Microneedling can also help lessen the appearance of scars and stretch marks on various different areas of the body. (3)
Similar to how we can combine microneedling with probiotics, it can also be combined with other procedures, such as radiofrequency energy delivery, to enhance the benefits that microneedling has on the skin. (3) Microneedling is well-tolerated and requires only a brief recovery period. (3)
Why Probiotics?
Probiotics are “beneficial bacteria” that are similar to the living microbes that are naturally present in the body. We introduce probiotics to the skin in order to help ameliorate manifestations of aging in the skin, like wrinkles, dryness, and discoloration. (4) By transferring these probiotics directly into the skin with microneedling, we can help restore microbial balance to the skin microbiome in a more efficient way than a topical probiotic cream alone. Addressing this root issue of microbial imbalance can provide effective, long-lasting results that leave patients with a healthy glow. Probiotics can also help prevent skin diseases by decreasing oxidative stress and helping to strengthen immune functions. (4)
Why Does Microneedling With Probiotics Work Better Than PRP?
Microneedling with probiotics offers a gentle yet effective approach to skin rejuvenation that can provide superior results for some individuals compared to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. However, the best treatment option will depend on factors such as the patient’s specific skin concerns, treatment goals, and preferences. Consulting with a qualified skincare professional can help determine the most suitable treatment plan for optimal results.
Some of the reasons microneedling with probiotics works better than PRP include:
- Enhanced Skin Barrier Function: Probiotics help to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, reducing moisture loss and protecting against environmental stressors. This can lead to improved overall skin health and resilience.
- Reduced Inflammation: Probiotics have natural, anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm redness and irritation, which makes microneedling with probiotics suitable even for people with sensitive skin. In contrast, PRP injections can cause temporary inflammation or discomfort.
- Microbial Balance: Microneedling with probiotics can help to rebalance the skin’s microbiome, promoting a healthy and diverse ecosystem of beneficial bacteria. This can lead to long-term improvements in skin health and appearance.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Microneedling with probiotics may be a more cost-effective option compared to PRP therapy, which typically involves multiple sessions and higher treatment costs.

FAQ
How does microneedling work?
Microneedling works by creating small “micro-wounds” on the surface of the skin with tiny needles on a handheld device. These holes usually close up within 3 days of healing. This natural healing process stimulates collagen production in the skin, which makes the skin look and feel healthier, more hydrated, and more elastic.
What can probiotics do for the skin?
Introducing probiotics to the skin can help restore balance to the skin microbiome, which is crucial to maintaining the health of the skin. As we age, the homeostasis of the skin microbiome can be disrupted by the slightest imbalance or reduction in certain important microbes. Probiotics can help simulate the microbes that are present in young and healthy skin, thereby preventing skin disease and accelerated aging.
How many microneedling with probiotics sessions should I receive?
The number of microneedling with probiotics sessions you should receive will depend on what issues you are treating and what results you want to achieve. Dr. Kellman will tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs. Oftentimes, we recommend that you consistently receive one microneedling with probiotics treatment per month for about 4-6 months for optimized results. It is important to keep in mind that the skin must heal completely in between each microneedling appointment.
How long is a microneedling with probiotics treatment session?
The amount of time a microneedling session takes will depend on the area that Dr. Kellman is treating. A singular microneedling session will most likely take around 30 minutes but can have a shorter time frame if the targeted area is smaller, or a longer one if the targeted area is larger.
